FA Cup Match: Crystal Palace 4-3 Liverpool (FA Cup Semi Final)
Date Played: 8th April 1990

This classic match started in favour for Liverpool as, Ian Rush stole through to collect a ball from Steve McMahon and opened the scoring on the 23rd minute. By the end of the first half it looked like Liverpool were going to coast to an easy victory. Palace emerged from the break with fresh resolve. Directly from the kick off, Pemberton outstripped the Liverpool defence down the right and pumped a high ball into the area. John Salako’s shot was only cleared to Mark Bright who blasted the equalizer with his left foot past Grobbelaar. Now, the Liverpool defence did not look assured. In the 70th minute, a free kick from Andy Gray was headed on by Bright at the near post and OReilly emerged from the goalmouth crush to put palace into a 2-1 lead. McMahon immediately equalized for Liverpool and it was game on. One minute later, Pemberton brought down Steve Staunton as he surged into the Palace box. John Barnes scored the penalty kick to put Liverpool ahead. In the dying minute of the game, Liverpool failed to clear from a corner and Gray showed great anticipation to head home and level the proceedings. The tension was unbearable as the match went into extra time. In the second period, Palace won a corner. As the ball came across, Alan Pardew rose above Ronnie Whelan to head home the winner.
